Your Village: Dannemora

DANNEMORA — Dannemora Volunteer Fire Department Chief Bruce Barber discussed with Village Board members some possible changes to the Clinton County Mutual Aid System.

Barber had attended a Clinton County Emergency Services meeting, then he brought up the topic to the Village Board, according to minutes by Clerk-Treasurer Donna Taylor.

Under review is a Clinton County Mutual Aid System realignment where designated departments would automatically respond every time in a given area.

Barber said his department would possibly be grouped with Saranac, Lyon Mountain and Beekmantown.

The realignment is an attempt to reduce response time to six minutes.

The new system would increase call volume for the Dannemora fire company, but Barber was confident his department could handle the change.

“His concern was if the county called about fire in the other areas, they would automatically send a truck, no matter what the call was,” Mayor Michael Bennett said.

“The main concern is running a fire truck down the road to something maybe as small as a smoke alarm going off without finding out if there was actually a structure fire. He (Barber) is going to have a meeting with his officers, but they haven’t got back to us about it.”

Also discussed at the recent Village Board meeting:

SLUDGE: The board weighed different options, including a bag system and dredging to remove sludge from the wastewater treatment plant, located on Ryan Road outside the village.

The State Department of Environmental Conservation recommends sludge removal.

“It’s a common occurrence,” Bennett said. “After so many years, the sludge will accumulate and build up. It comes to a point, you have to have it dredged and removed.

“At this time, the plant is still meeting its required numbers for our permit. So the board decided to wait until it came to a point where it needed to be done.
