ELIZABETHTOWN — Today, the American flag at Elizabethtown-Lewis Central School flies at half-staff to honor the memory of Albert W. Barclay, a longtime bus driver who died in an accidental fall.
Barclay, 74, suffered from the beginning stages of Alzheimer’s disease, State Police said in a press release issued Tuesday, and he had wandered away from his Water Street home in Elizabethtown on Aug. 23.
He fell down a rocky 47-foot embankment that leads to Branch Brook, suffering fatal injuries.
The home where Barclay lived is about 100 yards from the brook, police said.
Barclay worked for the school from 1968 until he retired in 1995, according to ELCS Superintendent Scott Osborne, with “a total 27 years of service to our students.”
Those who knew him described him as a very nice man and good neighbor and said he was much loved by the children he ferried back and forth to school.
