Cougars slip past Indians in CVAC volleyball

CHAMPLAIN — The Northeastern Clinton and Peru volleyball teams traded wins Tuesday, and the Cougars came up with the final — and most important — one.

The Cougars prevailed 3-2 in the Champlain Valley Athletic Conference match with games scores of 25-17, 20-25, 25-14, 19-25 and 25-15.

“It was a great effort by both teams (Tuesday),” Northeastern Clinton coach Brent Banker said. “Peru is a power serving team, and they put our serve receive to the test. We struggled at the service line but managed to string points together when it really counted.”

Brianna McCoy contributed 12 points, two aces, two kills and three blocks for the Cougars. Gabrielle Vasquez served 10 points, and Ashley McCoy also had 10 points, including four aces. Oriana LaFlesh added seven points.

“Our defense played well, blocking Peru’s strong attack,” Banker said. “My players played with a lot of energy and intensity on the court.”

Lea Perry handed out 23 assists for Peru and also served four points. Taylor Higgins had a match-high 10 kills to go along with nine digs, eight points and four aces. Madeline Kaplan chipped in nine points, four aces and nine kills, while Karlee Stephney served seven points.

Northern Adirondack 3, Saranac 2

ELLENBURG — The Bobcats won the last two games 25-22 and 25-14 to defeat the Chiefs.

Zoe Varin was strong for Northern Adirondack with 11 points and 10 kills, while Emma Trombley had nine points, three aces, seven kills and four digs. MacKenzie Fountain added 13 assists, five points and three digs. Katelyn Snide and Aubrey Kerr both served nine points.

“This was an exciting match,” Northern Adirondack coach Katrina Castine said. “Saranac has some very strong servers, and based on the amount of aces they accrued, we struggled with serve-receive at times. We will continue to work on this.”

PLATTSBURGH — Jordynne Ales had a big match with 16 points, seven aces and 21 digs to lead the Eagles to a sweep.

Shannon Ryan added 10 points, 10 kills and four digs, while Evelyn Vicencio chipped in 16 digs. Grace Kelly had 13 digs and five kills. Michaela Frechette contributed 23 assists.

Shannon Bracale had 14 digs and three aces for Plattsburgh, while Deanna LaBarge chipped in 10 kills, 12 digs and six points. Kianna Dragoon had 13 assists, and Amanda McMahon and Lauren Stanley each had 11 digs.

SARANAC LAKE — Ally Wallace had 18 points, including seven aces, to lake Lake Placid in a losing effort. Brenna Garrett added 11 points, five aces, four assists and four kills. Kiana Fell put down a team-high six kills, and Georgia O’Leary served six points.
