Woman dies in Altona automobile crash

Car collides with UniFirst truck on Military Turnpike

ALTONA — A woman died on Military Turnpike on Tuesday afternoon when her car and a UniFirst truck collided.

The accident occurred at about 2:30 p.m. on the bridge just south of where the turnpike/Route 190 intersects with Stark and Rabideau roads, near Miner Lake.

As of 5:45 p.m., emergency responders were still at the spot, and the road remained closed between Alder Bend and Devil's Den roads.

The woman, whose name was not released by police on Tuesday, was traveling in a gray Honda Civic with New York plates. The front end of the vehicle was crushed by the impact with the delivery truck.

And the truck was left tilted almost on its side over the east side of the bridge crossing the Great Chazy River; its right-side back wheel was bent almost to the underbody of the vehicle.

No information was available on the UniFirst driver or any possible passengers in either vehicle.

Clinton County Dispatch had first called Altona Volunteer Fire Department then requested response from Ellenburg Depot, saying then that it appeared injuries were serious.

As lightning darted across the sky, thunderstorms drenched rescue workers and police more than once as they dealt with the tragedy.
