---- — WILLSBORO — Willsboro Central School voters will be asked to approve a 3.39 percent tax-levy increase for the 2014-15 budget.

The total spending plan amounts to $8,225,769, an increase of 3.17 percent.

The tax levy of $5,087,419 would be $253,002 more than that of this year’s budget.

The tax rate per $1,000 assessed value would be $11.58, about 38 cents higher than this year’s amount. That would translate to about $1,680 for the year on a property assessed at $150,000.

“For the second year in a row, the district has a 3.3 percent tax-levy limit threshold increase,” Superintendent Stephen Broadwell said in a letter to School District residents.

“This proposed budget maintains our current programs and staff while providing the necessary resources for student success.”

COMMON CORE EFFORT

The two major areas of increase in the proposed budget are special-education services and a boost in the number of students who will be attending occupational educational programs at CV-TEC.

“This is a growing area as students prepare themselves for career readiness,” the superintendent said of CV-TEC enrollment.

“The district continues to evaluate all expenditures as well as the long-term financial impact and sustainability for our residents as well as our students.”

Also, Broadwell said in the letter, “the district has actively engaged in the Common Core initiative with our staff working diligently at providing instruction that assists our students in meeting the requirements for post-high-school experiences.”

 BUS PROPOSITION

There will be a separate proposition on the ballot to purchase a school bus and a van at a cost not to exceed $131,810. The OK from voters would allow the district to replace two aging vehicles.

Lisa Cumm, Jennifer Jacques, Herb Longware and John “Jack” Thompson will appear on the ballot as candidates for two openings on the Willsboro School Board.

The budget and School Board vote is set for noon to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 20, in the school gymnasium.
