SARANAC — A garage fire at 34 Ahern Road Friday may have been caused by the wood boiler near the structure, authorities said.

The detached garage is a total loss, but the home on the property was not damaged, Saranac Volunteer Fire Department Lt. James Terry said.

Homeowner Mike Ahern reported the fire at about 9 a.m., Terry told the Press-Republican recently.

It took the around 20 firefighters about an hour and a half to put out the blaze, with the Saranac Volunteer Fire Department back in service by about 1 p.m. Friday.

Ahern has insurance, Terry said.

A firefighter received a “minor scratch” that did not require any extensive medical attention, he said.

No one else was injured, Terry said.

Providing mutual aid were departments from Morrisonville, Dannemora, Cadyville, Lyon Mountain and Bloomingdale. Bloomingdale’s response was ultimately cancelled.

The Clinton Correctional Fire Brigade was on standby.


LAKE PLACID — A Lake Placid man was charged Tuesday with unlicensed operation and drunken driving.

Lake Placid Police pulled over Kenneth B. Whitney Jr., 31, early Tuesday morning for having insufficient tail lights on his vehicle, according to a news release from the Lake Placid Police Department.

Officers found Whitney to be intoxicated and arrested him, the release said.

Whitney was charged with first-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, a felony; driving while intoxicated, a misdemeanor, and insufficient tail lamps, an infraction.

He was arraigned in Lake Placid Village Court and sent to the Essex County Jail in lieu of $2,500 cash or $5,000 bond.

KEESEVILLE — A Keeseville woman was charged Saturday with criminal possession of a weapon.

Brandy J. Strouse, 29, allegedly pointed a long gun at a man and threatened to shoot him at 10 Hollywood Avenue in Keeseville, according to a news release from State Police.

Strouse was charged with third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a felony, and second-degree menacing, a misdemeanor.

She was arraigned in Chesterfield Town Court and was sent to the Essex County Jail in lieu of $5,000 cash or $10,000 bond.

SARANAC LAKE — A Saranac Lake woman was charged Oct. 23 with aggravated drunken driving.

According to a news release from Saranac Lake Police, Whitney M. Morgan, 27, was arrested after she failed to stop her vehicle at a stop sign.

Officers found her to be intoxicated after they pulled over her vehicle, the release said.

Later, Morgan was found to have a blood-alcohol content of more than .18 percent, police said.

Morgan also violated the terms of her conditional driver’s license, police said.

She was charged with felony aggravated driving while intoxicated, a felony; violation of a restricted license and failure to stop at a stop sign.

Morgan was arraigned in Saranac Lake Village Court and was released under the supervision of the Essex County Probation Department.
