Nancy Lee (Vaughan) Carter

WESTPORT — Nancy Lee (Vaughan) Carter, 74, of Ledge Hill Road in Westport, joined her beloved parents Rupert (Ted) and Alysa (Barber) Vaughan in eternal rest on Jan. 13, 2013.

She grew up in Westport, and upon completion of Westport Central School, attended SUNY Plattsburgh, graduating in 1962. During Nancy's teaching career she taught elementary education in Plattsburgh, Keeseville, Schenectady, Washington D.C. and Vallejo, Calif. Over the years she promoted a love of learning and the joy of reading to many children. Nancy was married to the late Eric Carter who served in the U. S. Navy. He was stationed in France where Nancy continued her educating career as a tutor. She also enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and experienced several cross-country trips. The sights she saw were captured in photographs as Nancy was an avid photographer.

After retirement, Nancy returned to the family homestead and enjoyed being a member of local organizations: The Champlain Valley Red Hat Society, Elizabethtown-Westport Garden Club, Elizabethtown Community Hospital Auxiliary, Westport Book Club and was a volunteer at the Heritage House Visitor Center.

Nancy is survived by her sister, Barbara A. Wrisley (Donald); brother, Richard A. Vaughan (Sandy); sister, Terry Judith Van Evera (Bill); and brother, F. Jeffrey Vaughan (Electa); and 12 nieces and nephews. She is also blessed with several great-nieces and nephews as well as many great-great nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Nancy's memory to the Westport Emergency Rescue Squad.

Calling hours will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16, at W.M. Marvins Funeral Home in Elizabethtown with the service immediately following, officiated by the Reverend Fred Shaw. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.
