Bowl for A Cause
set for Jan. 20
PLATTSBURGH — The first-annual Bowl For A Cause tournament will be held from 12:30 to 3 p.m. Jan. 20th at North Bowl Lanes. A donation of $10 is needed to compete, and that cost includes shoes and two games. All proceeds will be donated to the local scleroderma fund. Emmerling receives 2nd Rookie of the Week nod
CORTLAND —Kevin Emmerling of the Plattsburgh State men’s hockey team was named SUNY Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week for the week ending Jan. 13.
The Northbridge, Mass. native helped to spark the Cardinals’ comeback in Saturday’s 5-4 overtime win against No. 13 Williams. With the Cardinals facing a three-goal deficit, Emmerling got them going with a goal early in the third period. The rookie forward then added an assist on agoal at the 15:00 mark before netting the equalizer with 3:41 left in regulation to force overtime.
With the pair of goals over the weekend, Emmerling has tallied a team-high nine goals in 13 games. He was also named SUNYAC Rookie of the Week on Nov. 12 after a four-goal weekend against Buffalo State and Fredonia.
Player of the Week
CORTLAND —Junior Kathleen Payne picked up the second SUNYAC women’s basketball Player of the Week award of her career on Monday after leading the Cardinals to a 2-1 mark last week.
It looked as though the Cardinals were headed to a loss again Norwich last Tuesday before Payne canned a triple in the final minute that gave Plattsburgh its only lead of the game in a 51-47 victory. The 5-foot-8 forward from Goshen turned in a double-double performance with game-highs in points (18) and rebounds (10).
A season-high 25 points wasn’t enough in a 77-68 setback against Geneseo on Friday, but Payne led a balanced Plattsburgh attack with 14 points in a 72-63 win over Brockport on Saturday.
