VFW auxiliaries holding state conference in Lake Placid

LAKE PLACID — The New York Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary will hold its spring conference in Lake Placid this weekend — its first time in the Adirondacks in 25 years.

President Bonnie Burgy, from Camden, will preside at the event, which starts Friday, April 11, and runs through Sunday, April 13.

Representatives from 252 auxiliaries in eight districts will attend. That includes more than 3,100 members in the 29 auxiliaries in the Adirondack/North Country region, which is everything north of Albany.

Judith Lefebvre, president of the Peru VFW Ladies Auxiliary, is chair of the spring conference.

“All members are wives, widows, mothers, grandmothers, daughters, granddaughters and sisters of officers or enlisted personnel who served in any foreign country in a war zone or who earned hostile-fire or imminent-danger pay,” she said in a news release.

Honored guests will include New York State VFW Commander Michael Pascal and National VFW Ladies Auxiliary Guard Sandi Kreibell.

“Local, district, state and national auxiliaries donate thousands of hours to serve America’s veterans and their families in numerous ways that include hospital and home visits, meal preparations and financial assistance,” Lefebvre said.

She said the women also raise millions of dollars every year for local and national charities and programs, including cancer aid and research, the VFW National Home for Children and scholarship programs that promote Americanism and patriotism.

Each individual auxiliary also supports its own VFW and community, Lefebvre said.

“This annual conference enables the ‘sisters’ an opportunity to receive updated information and share on the best way to serve our veterans and their families while we remain ‘Guardians of Our Veterans Rights’ and continue ‘Keeping Our Veterans and Families Strong’,” she said.

At the Saturday night dinner, members will bring a gift to a hospitalized female or male veteran.
