Town Court still on in Crown Point

---- — CROWN POINT — The issue of who will handle cases for recused Crown Point Town Justice Arthur S. Miclette is expected be solved by court night Thursday, town officials say.

Miclette, 59, of Crown Point was arrested by State Police last week and charged with misdemeanor criminal possession of stolen property, for allegedly having tools missing from Champlain Valley Technical Educational Center in Mineville at his automobile repair business.

He stepped down as justice after the arrest, saying he would resume his post when he was cleared of the charge.

Miclette is the sole Town Court justice.

On Tuesday, Crown Point Town Supervisor Charles Harrington said they haven’t contracted with another official to cover Crown Point’s cases. The State Office of Court Administration will handle that, he said.

The next Crown Point Town Justice Court session is at 5 p.m. Thursday. Court has not been canceled, Harrington said, and is expected to be held with another justice on the bench.

“I am going to make myself knowledgeable about this issue before it’s over,” Harrington said. “There are qualified individuals who fill in as local justices, almost like circuit riders, and the Office of Court Administration will probably go that route.”

Miclette held court once a week, Harrington said, starting at 5 p.m. in the Town Hall at 17 Monitor Bay Park.

The Office of Court Administration did not return calls from the Press-Republican on Tuesday.
