Lawrence (Larry) C. Barcomb

CHAMPLAIN — Lawrence (Larry) C. Barcomb, 79, of Route 9, Champlain, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, March 27, 2013, at his winter home in Bonita Springs, Fla.

Lawrence was born on Nov. 18, 1933, in Sciota, N.Y., the son of Lawrence C. Barcomb Sr. and Beatrice (Guyette) Barcomb.

After graduating from Mooers Central School, Larry served with the U.S. Army as an M.P. from 1955 - 1957. Upon returning from the Service, Larry married Norma Pelkey on June 8, 1957 at St. Mary's Church in Champlain.

Larry worked as a lineman with NYSEG until 1965, at which time he started the family business, Barcomb's T.V. and Furniture on Route 9 in Champlain. While working 12 hour days with his wife, Norma, and raising a family, they still found time to open a second furniture store in Chateauguay and a third in Plattsburgh.

In 1972 while on vacation, Larry and Norma discovered the beautiful town of Bonita Springs in southwest Florida. Larry saw opportunity for growth in Florida and began Barcomb's Florida Enterprises, a successful real estate firm that purchased and developed both residential and commercial property.

In his spare time, Larry was an avid golfer. He was very involved with the North County Golf Club in Rouses Point and served in several capacities including board president. Larry continued to golf into retirement at his winter home on the 16th green of Spring Run Golf Course in Bonita Springs, Fla. Larry also enjoyed gardening and playing the organ.

In his younger years, Larry achieved the rating of private pilot and was the proud owner of a piper cub airplane. Larry was an avid sports fan and into his later years enjoyed attending the sporting events of his grandsons. He was also a life member of Champlain Knights of Columbus Council 3525.

Larry was predeceased by his parents; and a son, Bruce Barcomb.
