Rabideau announces Saranac Lake mayoral reelection bid

SARANAC LAKE — Mayor Clyde Rabideau has announced his bid for reelection.

He told the Press-Republican on Tuesday he will seek the Democratic caucus nomination on Jan. 22.

Village elections this year are set for March 18.

In addition to the mayoral seat, two trustee terms are up, those of Democrat and former Saranac Lake Mayor Tom Catillaz and Trustee Allie Pelletieri, a Conservative.

All are four-year terms.

'ACHIEVED MUCH'

Saranac Lake has achieved much in the past four years, Rabideau said.

Beyond teamwork with New York state to bring two new hotel developments to the streets downtown, Rabideau said the addition of a biotechnology business cluster is an important achievement, one the village looks to build upon in the next several years.

He said the village managed to keep the tax levy below the 2 percent tax-levy cap “even when it wasn’t the law of the state because we know how tough it is to pay the bills each week.”

Infrastructure improvements were kept at or under budget, he added.

“We also completed the million-dollar sidewalk (reconstruction), the $13 million Water Project and instituted new business practices in the village that don’t necessarily make headline news.

"Saranac Lake is just the greatest place in the world; it really is,” Rabideau said.

BALLOT INCOMPLETE

The official, political announcement came in the form of a letter with the greeting: “Dear Saranac Laker.”

“For the last four years, I worked very hard with our trustees to keep your taxes low, generate jobs and improve our village. On all counts, I believe, as a team, we ‘delivered,’ and we want to do even more in the years ahead,” the mayor said in a news release.

The ballot for the upcoming election has not been rounded out yet.

The GOP has not yet announced who it might endorse to run against Rabideau. And Catillaz and Pelletieri have not formally announced plans to seek reelection.

Elected to this mayoral seat in 2010, Rabideau was voted in as mayor of the City of Plattsburgh in 1989 and held that seat for 10 years. He owns and manages the Rabideau Corporation, a construction company based in Saranac Lake, and is a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local #910.
