Newcomb head doing well after surgery

---- —

NEWCOMB — Longtime Newcomb Town Supervisor George Canon is reportedly doing well after heart surgery Monday.

Canon, 75, had the operation at Glens Falls Hospital to repair an aortic aneurysm.

County Board of Supervisors Chair Randy Douglas (D-Jay) said Canon underwent six hours of surgery, starting early Monday morning, and forcing him to miss the board’s 215th organizational meeting that day.

On Tuesday, Douglas said he’d heard from Canon from his hospital room.

“He's doing well. He might come home (Wednesday).”

Canon will be recuperating at home for a few weeks, town officials said, and Deputy Supervisor Wester Miga will fill in during that period.

Miga is expected to handle the day-to-day administration of the town while Canon is out.

Canon is the longest serving member of the Essex County Board of Supervisors, having first taken office in 1990. He’s also former president of the Adirondack Association of Towns and Villages.

Canon is an avid fisherman and golfer, who previously said he was thinking of retiring from office at the end of his current term in 2015.
