MALONE — Newly elected legislators will chair three of the most active committees for the Franklin County Legislature.
Chairman Billy Jones (D-Chateaugay) has appointed Legislator Barbara Rice (D-Saranac Lake) to lead the Finance Committee, which oversees the county budget, insurance and the offices of the county treasurer, county auditor and Real Property Tax Service.
Rice said she was excited to be named chair of the Finance Committee and is looking forward to the work on economic-development and budgetary issues as she familiarizes herself with the county’s $104 million spending plan for 2014.
“I believe with my background, my experience and my skill set, this is a committee I can really contribute to,” she said.
“It will be great to work with (longtime legislators) Paul Maroun and Tim Smith with their experience at the county level, and I’m excited about working with the county manager and county treasurer.
“I think we’ll be a great team,” Rice said, “and I know we have a lot of work ahead of us.”
Newly elected Legislator Carl Sherwin (D-Malone) was named by Jones to chair the Human Resources Committee, which will make decisions involving the County Nursing Home, Office for the Aging, Social Services, Veterans Services, Public Health, Youth Bureau, and Coordination and Referral of Extended Services (CARES).
And Jones tapped new legislator Don Dabiew (D-Bombay) as chair of the Public Safety Committee, which oversees the District Attorney’s Office, Probation, the Public Defender’s Office, the Sheriff’s Department and County Jail, Emergency Services, the Conflict Defender’s Office and STOP DWI/Traffic Safety.
The only Republican on the Board of Legislators, Paul Maroun of Tupper Lake, was appointed chair of the Administrative Committee again.
He is in charge of issues relating to the County Clerk’s Office, Board of Elections, County Manager’s Office, Negotiations and Grievance, Personnel Office, the county attorney, county coroners and data processing.
