Crown Point Community Dinner canceled

CROWN POINT — An approaching storm forced the cancellation of the Crown Point Community Thanksgiving Dinner, planned for today.

One of the organizers, the Rev. David C. Hirtle, said they had been monitoring the coastal storm as it headed this way and decided it was too dangerous to ask people, especially senior citizens, to drive to the Crown Point United Methodist Church for the meal.

“We would rather cancel, at this moment, than either place those traveling in harm’s way or prepare food that will certainly be wasted,” Hirtle said by email.

“This is heartbreaking to do, but we must err on the side of caution.”

He said anyone who was making food for the dinner that can be frozen or will keep refrigerated for a week should take it to the Food Pantry at the United Methodist Church on Creek Road.

“These items will be distributed to those in need,” he said. “Please pray that our efforts will be blessed and that the residual food will find its way into needed homes.”

One phase of the storm was expected to bring snow, sleet, rain and freezing rain to the area today.
