Saints fall to JCC

SARANAC LAKE — Despite a spirited comeback from a 47-28 halftime deficit, the North Country Community College men's basketball team couldn't hold a late 3-point lead and fell to Jefferson Community College, 86-82, Tuesday night.

Drew Boyea knocked down six 3- pointers — the team hit 16 shots from behind the arc — and finished with a team-high 27 points for the Saints (0-1). Tony Sparkman added 17.

Early foul trouble to sophomores Tony Sparkman Antrelle Whitmore helped Jefferson erase a 7-point lead by the Saints. The Cannoneers turned that deficit into a 47-28 lead by going on a big run with eight minutes left.

Boyea, Sparkman and Justin Poirer sparked the Saints in the second half, and North Country grabbed a 3-point lead with less than two minutes to play.

The Cannoneers tied the game up with a minute to go and forced a turnover. Jefferson took a 2-point lead and sunk its free throws when the Saints started fouling.

The Cannoneers had duccess on many trips to the charity stripe, hitting 27-of-36 from the line.

"We had some great second half performances," North Country coach Chad LaDue said. "I was proud of how they fought back."

The Saints return to the court 7 p.m. Thursday at Clinton Community College.
