HOGANSBURG -- It took some 45 firefighters three hours to extinguish a house fire here Monday night.

The home, located at the corner of Route 95 and Route 37, was heavily damaged by the blaze, according to a news release from the Hogansburg Akwesasne Volunteer Fire Department. The homeowners were away when the fire started.

Flames were showing through the roof of the attached garage when fire trucks arrived, responding to the 10:47 p.m. call.

The fire moved through the attic of the attached garage and penetrated the walls and eaves of the house causing "major fire damage to the second story," Fire Chief Norman Peters said in the release.

Ventilation in the attic space was difficult because of a sheet-metal roof that covered wood shingles.

Two firefighters sustained minor injuries and were treated on site by a Bombay Ambulance crew.

Tankers from Fort Covington and Bombay fire departments were called to the fire because the municipal water tower is undergoing scheduled maintenance.

Route 95 traffic was detoured to the Bombay/Helena Road while firefighters fought the blaze. Fire crews were back in service at 2:42 a.m.

The Franklin County Cause and Origin team is investigating the fire, and an official cause was not available by Tuesday evening.
