Swine-flu case confirmed in Essex County
ELIZABETHTOWN — The first and only case of swine flu to be found so far in Essex County was reported this week by the County Public Health Department.

Officials said the patient is currently hospitalized at Porter Medical Center in Middlebury, Vt.

County Public Health Director Kathryn Abernethy said a case in Essex County was probably inevitable, since the illness is throughout the state.

The symptoms showed up last week, she said. The person infected with swine flu is an adult, and the case is not considered life-threatening.

Anyone who had contact with the patient has been advised to stay at home if they had any symptoms, Abernethy said.

There have been 35 deaths and 2,200 cases of swine-flu in New York state, most of them in New York City.

Tea Party set for Plattsburgh
PLATTSBURGH — Local residents will be joining people in cities across the nation on the Fourth of July for a Tea Party to protest "fiscal irresponsibility" in Washington, D.C., and Albany.

The demonstration is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday in Trinity Park.

A Tea Party held in Plattsburgh in April attracted nearly 100 protestors. Co-organizers Jonathan Nelson and Oliver Barie expect to double that number on the Fourth.

"We cannot just sit here and watch as our government creates massive debt for generations to come," Nelson said in a news release.

"Our government thinks it can spend its way out of debt," Barie said. "I may be only 19, but even I know that the answer to massive debt is not more of the same."

A number of local civic and business leaders have been invited to speak. The program will include an open microphone session with a maximum of two minutes for any person wishing to speak in support of fiscal responsibility.

The protest will last about one hour and will conclude with a tribute to the original Independence Day.

Attendees are encouraged to bring flags and homemade signs.

ELLENBURG — The Ellenburg Democrat Committee is looking for people interested in running for an elected town position this fall.

Anyone who is interested is asked to call 594-8806 or 594-7628 by July 17.

City Common Council meets tonight
PLATTSBURGH — The City of Plattsburgh Common Council will meet tonight instead of Thursday due to the Fourth of July holiday.

The council will consider several agenda items, including approving a contract with Monahan Brothers for repairing the roof of the Alpert Barn at South Acres Park for $33,777, several appointments to the Library Board of Directors and a travel request from the Police Department.

The meeting begins with a work session at 5 p.m., followed by the regular meeting at 5:30 p.m. at City Hall.

AVCS School Board has busy agenda
CLINTONVILLE — The AuSable Valley Central School Board reorganization meeting will be held at 6:15 tonight in room C200 at the school in Clintonville.

It is anticipated that the meeting will begin with an executive session at 6:15, followed immediately by the regular session.

The board will consider special-education recommendations, an agreement with St. Lawrence-Lewis BOCES, school lunch prices for 2009-10, the E.M. Cooper Memorial Public Library contract, non-resident student tuition, Senior Citizen Club mileage and contract for services for preschool students.

The meeting is open to all.

City adjusts trash pickup for holiday
PLATTSBURGH — There will be no garbage collections by the City Public Works Department throughout the city Friday.

Friday's collection will be done Thursday.

For the rest of the week, collections will be done on their regular days.
