SARANAC — Saranac Central School District will hold a special election today to fill an open seat on the School Board.

The candidates for this vacancy are Samantha Cross, Martha Nist Dickie and David DuPree.

The vote will be held from noon to 8 p.m. at the Saranac Middle School gymnasium.

The special election was needed because of a hitch with the May vote. Candidates in the district have to run for a specific seat and are not elected "at large."

Two seats were open this year, but all the candidates opted to run for the same seat. Robert Brooks was elected to that post.

The other seat was left with no candidates.

Residents submitted 14 write-in votes on Election Day, but all were for separate candidates, so the special election was scheduled.

Cross, Dickie and Dupree were the candidates who stepped forward.

Cross, 42, is an account executive. She is a volunteer with the Family School Organization and past president of the Saranac Schools PALS program.

Dickie, 55, is self-employed as a tutor. She is president of the Family School Organization and led the Long-Range Planning Committee and the Shared Decision-Making Committee.

DuPree, 51, is a full-time student working toward a degree in business administration. He is former president of the Civil Service Employees Association at Saranac Central School.

The successful candidate will serve for the remainder of the unexpired term and will take office immediately.
