Sentinels snap Saranac's streak
TICONDEROGA -- The final unbeaten team in Champlain Valley Athletic Conference baseball this season fell Tuesday afternoon when Ticonderoga recorded a 5-3 victory over Saranac.
Hunter Denno struck out nine, walked one and allowed eight hits in going the distance for the win. Losing pitcher Jordan Keysor, who also went the route, fanned seven, walked one and surrendered eight hits.
"Both pitchers pitched well and did a good job," said Ticonderoga head coach Dan Dorsett.
Anthony Barnao went three-for-three and Jake Taylor added two hits for the Sentinels (6-1). Barnao and Steitz rapped home runs.
Richard Chase and Nick Desroches paced the Chiefs (7-2, 6-1) with two hits apiece.
Ticonderoga scored in the second inning when Barnao singled and later came across on Steven Lenhart's squeeze bunt.
"We were hoping to score first because we knew Saranac was going to hit the ball," said Dorsett.
Doubles by Todd Carr and Barnao gave the Sentinels a 2-0 lead in the fourth and Steitz's two-run homer made it 4-0 in the fifth.
The Chiefs got a run back in the sixth when Mark Eggleston singled and later scored on John Canning's double. But, Barnao put Ticonderoga back up by four with a solo homer in the home half.
Adam Gillette's double, Chase's single and Nick Desroches' two-run single pulled the Chiefs to within 5-3 in the seventh. But, with the tying run at the plate, Denno struck out the next two batters to end the game.
