PLATTSBURGH -- A Plattsburgh man was arrested Tuesday and charged with first-degree robbery, a Class B felony, and second-degree menacing, a Class A misdemeanor, after allegedly robbing his elderly mother at knife point.
The Plattsburgh City Police Department received a complaint from a female resident of an apartment located at 34 Flynn Ave., a senior-citizens housing complex, at about 11 a.m. The victim, a 76-year-old female, reported that her son, Vernon Chellis, 51, of Plattsburgh, displayed a knife and demanded money from her during a visit to the apartment.
The victim gave Chellis $50 in cash. Chellis then immediately fled her apartment with the money. Officers recovered the knife near the crime scene. At approximately 6:15 p.m., uniformed police officers located Chellis on Goff Avenue in the City of Plattsburgh. Chellis fled on foot from pursuing officers who apprehended him without further incident.
Chellis was arraigned in Plattsburgh City Court and remanded to the Clinton County Jail with no bail. Chellis is scheduled to appear in Plattsburgh City Court for further court action Friday.
No injuries were reported as a result of the incident and an investigation is continuing.
