NY officials host hearing on upstate truck traffic

— SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) — State regulators are taking public comments on what to do about big trucks rolling through upstate New York communities.
The state Department of Transportation will host a hearing on the issue Wednesday evening at the New York state fairgrounds.
Gov. David Paterson told the transportation department earlier this year to develop regulations for large truck routes because growing numbers of truckers have been using state highways and local roads as shortcuts to save money on gas and avoid tolls and weigh stations on interstate routes.
Communities have been particularly upset about garbage trucks hauling solid waste to the Seneca Meadows landfill in Seneca County.
The governor says the new rules will not affect local pickup and delivery trucks.
