BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — The newly appointed deputy secretary of U.S. Homeland Security is taking a get-acquainted tour of the northern border, meeting with U.S. and Canadian authorities on new border crossing rules and other issues.

Jane Holl Lute began the day at the Peace Bridge linking Buffalo and Fort Erie, Ontario. A trip to the Canadian capital of Ottawa also was on Wednesday's agenda.

In Buffalo, Lute said she isn't anticipating problems with the implementation of stricter crossing rules under the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative. Beginning June 1, travelers will have to present a passport, enhanced driver's license or other secure document to enter or re-enter the United States.

Critics worry the requirements will snarl traffic and hurt tourism.
