NCCS holds off AuSable in basketball

CLINTONVILLE — Rodney Grimshaw and Tom Bedard each tossed in 13 points as Northeastern Clinton held off a strong AuSable Valley comeback attempt for a 42-39 victory in Champlain Valley Athletic Conference boys’ basketball Monday.

The Patriots took a slim 13-11 lead after the first quarter, but the wheel’s fell off in the second and third.

“We only scored 12 points in the mid-quarters and got outscored 28-12,” AuSable Valley coach Jamie Douglass said.

The Patriots, though, were able to outscore the Cougars 14-3 in the fourth quarter, but their comeback attempt would fall short.

“We finally started attacking their zone,” Douglass said. “We didn’t shoot well in the first half at all. We had it down to two, but had a turnover and had to foul. They hit a free throw and time expired before we could throw up a three.

“They can shoot. Grimshaw had a huge third quarter with 10 points. (Austin) Tetreault only had two threes, but they came at big times.”

Tetreault finished with eight points.

Shane Douglas led all scorers with 17 points for AuSable Valley. Zach Cosgrove added 10 points, while Austin Depo finished with seven points and 15 rebounds.

“We were down by 14 and we came back,” Douglass said. “We just didn’t get that one shot we needed. I am proud of the kids.

“I am happy with the effort. Sometimes you can’t overcome cold shooting and (Monday) it was cold.”
