---- — FULTON — The Adirondack Landowners Association has initiated a three-part education program to reduce the spread of aquatic invasive species.
In collaboration with the Department of Environmental Conservation, the association urged the Department of Motor Vehicles to include in all mailed renewals for boat and trailer registrations an educational insert about preventing the spread of invasive species. That started being done in April.
In addition, local DMV offices will be partnering with the association to help with the effort. County clerks will clear space for signage and educational brochures, which will be provided by the association.
In a news release, Landowners Association President Tom Williams praised the clerks for their participation.
The third prong of the educational effort involves the cooperation of private-sector businesses and local government. The association will work with North Country business owners and government officials to have posters and handouts displayed throughout the Adirondacks.
The organization, which is based in Fulton, was founded to encourage continued stewardship and sound resource management of the land, promote awareness of the role played by private landowners in the park and to advocate for laws, regulations and government policies that promote good stewardship by private landowners and also recognize and preserve their rights.
The group represents about 3,500 members who collectively own almost 250,000 acres of private land in the Adirondacks.
