Hockey Cards slide; women hang tough

Press-Republican

---- — PLATTSBURGH — The old adage, to be the best, you have to beat the best, could easily apply to the Plattsburgh State hockey Cardinals this week.

Bob Emery’s Redbirds (6-2-0) slipped two places to seventh in the latest U.S. College Hockey Online.com poll for Div. III out Monday. But Plattsburgh will have an excellent opportunity to regain favor in the eyes of the pollsters when they visit top-ranked Oswego State on Saturday.

The Great Lakers, out to a 7-0-0 start, garnered 15 of the 20 first-place votes in this week’s poll and currently hold a 12-point advantage on No. 2 Norwich, which won the PrimeLink Great Northern Shootout over the weekend. Plattsburgh, after losing to Middlebury, 3-2, on Friday, salvaged a split, beating St Thomas, 3-2, for third place.

The Oswego road test, the final away game of the first semester, falls in the middle of a rugged stretch for Plattsburgh. It began with the PrimeLink, which included four nationally ranked teams.

After the Great Laker contest, the Cardinals return home to get ready for Norwich, which will visit Stafford Arena on Dec. 7. The Cardinal Classic, Dec. 28-29, has eighth-ranked Amherst, Elmira and Wesleyan in the field. Plattsburgh will take on Wesleyan the first night.

Women add to vote total

PLATTSBURGH — The Plattsburgh State Cardinals, fresh off a championship showing over the weekend in the Cardinal-Panther Classic, picked up two more first-place votes in the latest U.S. College Hockey Online poll for Division III women’s hockey.

Kevin Houle’s Cardinals, who defeated host Middlebury 3-2 in the final Sunday afternoon, held the top spot with 12 first-place votes and 147 points. Plattsburgh State is off to a 7-0-1 start.

Oddly, Gustavus Adolphus, ranked No. 2, earned another first-place vote and closed the gap on Plattsburgh State without playing last week. The Gusties (5-0-0) now have 3 first-place votes with 126 points. They trail the Cardinals by 21 for a gain of two over the Nov. 19 poll.

Norwich (5-1-2) stayed No. 3 while Middlebury (3-1-0) moved up one place to fourth. Elmira College (8-1-1) fell from fourth to fifth.

Plattsburgh will be at unranked Buffalo State this weekend and Manhattanville on Dec. 7 to close out the semester. The Cardinals return to host Norwich on Jan. 6.
