Sexual predator gets 20 years

MALONE — A Franklin County man will serve 20 years in state prison for sexual conduct with two girls younger than 13 that went on for years.

After three days of testimony before Acting County Court Judge Felix Catena, Elwood J. Adams Jr., 39, formerly of 306 State Route 86, Paul Smiths, was found guilty of first-degree course of sexual conduct with a child.

“The People’s primary witnesses were the two victims in the matter,” said a news release from the Franklin County District Attorney’s Office.

“The jury also heard testimony from State Police Investigator Sean Finn and Dr. Donald Lewites, an expert in interfamilial child sex abuse syndrome.

“Adams took the witness stand in his own defense.”

He was sentenced June 7 to 20 years on each count and will serve them concurrently.

Adams was also ordered to serve 20 years of post-release supervision and must register as a sex offender.

The District Attorney’s Office, State Police and Franklin County Social Services Department’s Child Protective Services Unit investigated, and he was charged with sexually assaulting the two girls in the Town of Brighton.

They said the contact had been going for years.

Adams also had sexual intercourse with at least one of the girls, prosecutors said.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorneys Elizabeth Crawford and David Hayes, who said in a news release he hoped the sentencing brings closure to the two young victims.

District Attorney Derek Champagne said he sought a 40-year prison sentence for Adams, “but I’m just happy (that) for the next 20 years, he’ll be off the streets and away from children.

“I’m thankful for the jurors sorting through Mr. Adams’ web of deception and manipulation of two children and reaching their verdict.”
