Police: Shoplifting mom brought kids along

PLATTSBURGH — When Wal-Mart employees approached a woman they had seen shoplifting, police say, her 11-year-old daughter was holding a bag with some stolen items inside.

"Her kids were helping her shoplift, unknowingly," State Police Public Information Officer Jennifer Fleishman said.

The other child was riding in the shopping cart, she said.

Further cementing the suspicions of loss-prevention staff who witnessed the West Chazy woman stealing, the trooper said, DVDs fell out of Mindy M. Gaudette's shirt as they confronted her.

Gaudette, 32, tried to leave the store, located at 25 Consumer Square, with electronics merchandise valued at about $1,033.68, State Police said.

Employees took action after she passed the "last point of sale," or checkout counter, Fleishman said.

Gaudette was arrested at about 8 p.m. Thursday, June 12, and charged with fourth-degree grand larceny, a felony, and endangering the welfare of a child.

State Police notified Clinton County Child Protective Services, but Fleishman didn't know on Monday whether the children were removed from their mother's care.

Arraigned in Plattsburgh Town Court, Gaudette was taken to Clinton County Jail in lieu of $2,000 cash bail, $4,000 bond.

She posted bail on Saturday, according to an officer at the jail.
