---- — Reflecting on letters

TO THE EDITOR: It’s been an interesting day of reflection for me.

This morning, I heard the song “My Way.” The lyrics caused me to remember my husband Nick’s persona: “For what is a man, what has he got? If not himself, then he has naught, to say the things he truly feels…”

Nick, who died last fall, was a frequent letter contributor. Politically conservative, he would offer thoughts in that arena to readers. Later today, someone mentioned that Nick had been defended in a Letter to the Editor regarding on dated March 12.

The earlier letter stated: “The purpose of my letter is to say thank you to Leo, Tom, Nick and Clyde Sr. for their continuing submissions to this paper. Every time one of their irrational, hate-filled screeds appears, dozens of new Democrats are created, meaning there will continue to be a possibility for representative government in this area, state and country. Thank you so much for helping the democratic cause.”

This equates to labeling these men irrational and filled with hate. These words do not describe Nick. To him, all politicians were fair game whose careers invited public scrutiny. However, in the letters Nick wrote, I cannot find that he ever attacked another writer.

I question whether this letter should have been published considering the Press-Republican criterion: “This forum is to advance the discussion of issues, not to make personal judgments about other contributors or those in the news.”

Rather than penning disparaging remarks about others, contributors would be better served by writing in support of their own causes.

Hopefully, writers will abide by the spirit of Letters to the Editor and concentrate on issues at hand. Our viewpoints may be diverse, but we are North Country neighbors united in our love of the USA.

TO THE EDITOR: In a recent letter, the writer trashed the Democrats. Please read my letter about Republicans Bush and Cheney and what they did to America, our soldiers, families of Americans and Iraqis. You be the judge.

Veteran Tomas Young wrote this, published by Truthdig:

I write this letter on behalf of husbands and wives who have lost spouses, on behalf of children who have lost a parent, on behalf of the fathers and mothers who have lost sons and daughters and on behalf of those who care for the many thousands of veterans who have brain injuries.

I write this letter on behalf of those veterans whose trauma and self-revulsion for what they have witnessed, endured and done in Iraq have led to suicide and on behalf of the active-duty soldiers and Marines who commit, on average, a suicide a day.

I write this letter on behalf of the some 1 million Iraqi dead and on behalf of the countless Iraqi wounded. I write this letter on behalf of us all — the human suffering your war has left behind, those who will spend their lives in unending pain and grief.

I write this letter, to you, Mr. Bush and Mr. Cheney. I write not because I think you grasp the terrible human and moral consequences of your lies, manipulation and thirst for wealth and power.

I write this letter because I want to make it clear that hundreds of thousands of veterans, along with millions of my fellow citizens, along with hundreds of millions more in Iraq and the Middle East, know fully who you are and what you have done.

You may evade justice, but in our eyes you are each guilty of egregious war crimes, of plunder and, finally, of murder, including the murder of thousands of young Americans — whose future you stole.
