---- — PLATTSBURGH — Grenda M. (Czuryla) Chapin, 65, of Malone, formerly of North Bangor, died March 29 at Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital in Plattsburgh after a courageous battle with Multiple Myeloma.
Grenda was born Dec. 16, 1947 in Herkimer, N.Y., She was the daughter of the late Edmund Dominic and Lorraine Theresa (Mansfield) Czuryla. A 1966 graduate of Herkimer High School, Grenda continued her education at Fulton-Montgomery Community College and SUNY Potsdam where she earned both her Bachelors 98 and Masters 03 degree in Education with honors.
On October 24, 1970 she was married to Dale Chapin at St. Josephs Church in Herkimer. For 34 years she and her husband Dale owned and operated Blue Top Farm Inc. in North Bangor, N.Y. She was a devoted farm wife and mother but her love for teaching was the most defining passion in her life.
Prior to returning to college, she was employed with the North Bangor Veterinary Clinic, Aubuchon Hardware, St. Josephs Ursuline Convent, and at Bishop Smith Memorial School in Malone where she discovered her love for teaching. That love for teaching led her back to college later in life to complete her degree in education. From there, she went on to have a 14 year career teaching fourth grade at the St. Regis Mohawk School and retired in June of 2012.
She was a communicant of St. Augustines Roman Catholic Church as well as a lay Eucharistic minister, catechism teacher, and member of the Altar and Rosary Society. She was one of the founding members of the Sports Booster Club for Brushton-Moira Central School. She was a member of Cornell Cooperative Extension, Home Bureau, Malone College Club, Moira Historical Association, and the Franklin County Agricultural Society of which she chaired the vegetable hall exhibit at the Franklin County Fair for the past four years.
She is survived by her husband of 42 years, Dale Chapin of Malone; her three sons, a daughter and their spouses; Craig and Jessica Chapin of Napa, Calif., Robert and Jessica Chapin of San Diego, Calif., Keith and Beth Chapin of Groton, N.Y., and Kerry and Kristen Chapin-Lavigne of Plattsburgh, N.Y.; a brother, Lawrence Czuryla of Malone, and her five grandchildren, Maggie, Eliza, Anna, Isaac, and Liam.
Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. And 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, April 5 at the Spaulding Funeral Home, 530 East Main St., Malone, NY, 12953. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Augustines Church in North Bangor, N.Y. at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 6. Spring interment will be in the parish cemetery.
