CLINTONVILLE — Katie Matott took off on a breakaway with just over 12 minutes remaining and snuck one past AuSable Valley’s Bryce Douglass to score the game-winning goal in Northeastern Clinton’s 2-1 Northern Soccer League girls’ soccer victory.
Rachel Knapp gave the Patriots a 1-0 lead when she scored on an assist from Kendra Niemann with 27:21 remaining in the first half.
The lead would remain until Jenna Lavalley found the back of the net 3:06 into the second half. Taylor Rabideau collected the assist.
Then, Matott scored her game-winner with 12:09 remaining in the game.
“Both teams played well and controlled the game at different times,” AuSable Valley coach Bruce Bourgeois said. “Coach (Tim) Surprenant kept his team focused in the second half to keep the pressure on the AuSable side.
“(Christina) Paola played an excellent game in net for NCCS.”
Paola turned away nine shots to earn the victory. Douglass made eight stops for the Patriots.

ELIZABETHTOWN — Ashley Carpenter scored on two occasions in the Knights’ two-goal win over the Lions.
Carpenter opened scoring with 36:06 gone in the first half. The assist was credited to Paige Spittler.
Carpenter, a first-year player on the varsity level, helped Seton Catholic to a 2-0 lead with her second tally at 28:40. Sam Bashaw helped setup the goal.
“Paige Spittler and Ashley Carpenter were very tough,” Elizabethtown-Lewis coach Steve Denton said. “They work the ball well together off the give-and-go. They broke through our defense both times. Defensively, Lily Whalen played well for us (Monday).”
Kelli Ryan picked up the win for the Knights in net, saving three shots.
