PLATTSBURGH — CVPH Medical Center has signed a non-binding letter of intent with a nationally known dialysis company to acquire and operate the hospital’s renal services.
Once approved, American Renal Associates will operate the H.K. Freedman Renal Center in Plattsburgh, as well as satellite services at Elizabethtown Community Hospital, inpatient services at CVPH and the home-dialysis program run by the Medical Center.
“The current CVPH nephrologists will continue to manage care of the patients, and employees will remain part of the CVPH team through an arrangement between CVPH and American Renal Associates to ensure the continued superb care to renal patients,” the Medical Center said in a statement.
“We are going through due diligence now and will have to file a certificate of need with the state,” Michael Hildebran, director of public relations for CVPH, told the Press-Republican. “It could happen as soon as summer.”
CVPH currently loses money operating its renal-services programs, and the switch is a way to save without impacting patient services, Hildebran said.
“The health-care system has changed dramatically, and today, hospitals represent less than 5 percent of the providers in renal services,” the CVPH statement noted.
“It is difficult for hospitals to operate a financially viable dialysis program. Large private companies, such as American Renal, have thrived in the dialysis-services business because of their collaboration with nephrologists and clinical, operational and managerial expertise.”
American Renal operates 130 dialysis centers in 22 states and the District of Columbia.
The H.K. Freedman Renal Center, located at the CVPH Health Plaza on Smithfield Boulevard near Hannaford grocery store, offers a 24-station facility that has consistently received favorable nationwide statistics for its services.
The center opened in 1997. The four-station unit at Elizabethtown opened in 1998.
CVPH renal services include hemodialysis, continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis, continuous cycling peritoneal dialysis, rehabilitation programs, comprehensive education for patients and family members and inpatient dialysis on the hospital’s R-7 nursing unit.
