---- — ELLENBURG DEPOT — Northern Adirondack Central School’s FFA chapter has organized a fundraiser for a local woman and her son who are both battling cancer.
The group, formerly known as Future Farmers of America and now just as FFA, will host a spaghetti dinner and Chinese auction from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 15, to benefit Lori Kashorek, 41, of West Chazy and her 18-year-old son, Timothy.
Despite never having smoked, Lori, a former NAC FFA member, was diagnosed with Stage 3 lung cancer last March. Less than four months later, Timothy, a student at Ohio Valley University in Parkersburg, W.Va., was diagnosed with testicular cancer.
To partake in the spaghetti dinner, event attendees are asked to make a monetary donation of any amount. All proceeds from the fundraiser, which will take place in the Northern Adirondack High School cafeteria, will go to help Lori and Timothy with their expenses.
Also part of the event will be a Chinese auction, for which local businesses and residents have donated items to be auctioned off.
“We have a ton of different items,” said Karen LaBombard, NAC FAA adviser and agricultural teacher at the school.
Among them are gift certificates and baskets, paintings, winter-clothing accessories, cash and edibles.
While a NAC FFA member, according to LaBombard, Lori was actively involved in the group, which aims to foster the potential for leadership, personal growth and career success among student participants through agricultural education.
The NAC chapter comprises approximately 60 members in grades six through 12 and 35 in grade five.Throughout the year, the group hosts fundraisers and participates in leadership and career-development events.
The spaghetti dinner and Chinese auction are part of NAC’s celebration of National FFA week, taking place this week at the school.
LaBombard hopes many people will attend the fundraiser and show support of Lori and Timothy.
“The kids are very excited about this,” she said of the event.
