Nancy Jean Law


---- — TICONDEROGA, N.Y. — Nancy Jean Law, 70, passed away surrounded by her loving family Sunday, June 23, 2013 at her home on Lake George following a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Born on July 14, 1942 in Troy, N.Y., Nancy was raised in Waterford, N.Y., as the daughter of the late Ruth Esther King Costello and Nelson Joseph Costello. Nancy earned a bachelor's degree from Drew University in Madison, N.J., and a master's degree from Syracuse University.

Nancy started her lengthy career in teaching at Ovid Central School in Ovid, N.Y., and then taught for four years in Lawrence Township in Mercer County, N.J. She relocated to Saratoga Springs, N.Y., in 1969. She was a homemaker and dedicated volunteer to many organizations in Saratoga, including League of Women Voters. She also helped establish a local affiliate of Literacy Volunteers. A longtime active member of the Saratoga Springs United Methodist Church, Nancy served as president of United Methodist Women both locally and regionally and as a Trustee with the Troy Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church. She also was a longtime and early supporter of the Reconciling Ministries Network.

Nancy returned to teaching at Greenwich Central Schools in the mid-1980s and served as a remedial reading and mathematics teacher for more than two decades before retirement in 2005. She made her home in Ticonderoga shortly after retirement, enjoying the beauty and scenery of Lake George and the Adirondacks for the remainder of her life. Nancy enjoyed spending time with her extensive network of family and friends, as well as cooking, traveling and reading. She also was an expert crafter, skilled in beadwork, knitting, crocheting and sewing.

Nancy was a longtime board member of the Heritage Museum in Ticonderoga and active in the Adirondack Torch Club and Carillon Garden Club.

Survivors include her devoted partner of nearly 20 years, the Rev. Nancy A. Carter, also of Ticonderoga; beloved daughter, Erin J. Law, Esq. (Christine Reindl) of Brooklyn, N.Y.; son, Thomas J. Law Jr. (Elizabeth Collins) of Saratoga Springs, N.Y.; and cherished grandchildren, Owen James, Caroline Ruth and Dylan Francis. She was previously married to the late Thomas J. Law.

Memorial services celebrating Nancy's life will be held at 5 p.m. Monday, July 1, 2013 at the Saratoga Springs United Methodist Church and at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 2, 2013 at the First United Methodist Church, Ticonderoga.

A private burial will be in Valley View Cemetery in Ticonderoga.
