Jury selection underway for Paul Taylor trial

---- — ELIZABETHTOWN — Nine jurors were seated Monday for the trial of Paul J. Taylor.

Jury selection continues this morning.

The case stems from the death of Robert M. Rennie, who died of injuries that occurred in Keeseville in late August 2012.

Taylor, 39, faces charges, handed up by an Essex County grand jury, of second-degree murder, gang assault and possession of a weapon.

He has been held in Essex County Jail without bail since an arrest for alleged rape charges made the day after Rennie was found lifeless at the bottom of Mill Hill.

This trial is the third case connected with Rennie’s death to go before a jury in Essex County.

Scott E. Denno, 20, was found guilty of first-degree manslaughter and gang assault after his trial ended in May. He was subsequently sentenced to a maximum 25 years in state prison.

In late May, Michael D. Rivers, 36, was also found guilty by a jury. Convicted of first-degree manslaughter and gang assault, his sentencing was adjourned to November, as a newly appointed attorney becomes familiar with the case.

Rennie, 45, of Keeseville died of blunt force trauma and internal bleeding attributed to injuries from boots and sneakers, according to testimony in the previous trials. Both his lungs were punctured by ribs broken in the attack, among other injuries.

Taylor’s trial will begin after the jury is selected.
