Harold L. "Red" Bowman Jr.

DANNEMORA — Mr. Harold L. "Red" Bowman Jr., 87, of Smith Street in Dannemora, passed away Saturday, June 29, 2013, at his home with family by his side and under the care of Hospice of the North Country.

He was born in New York City on Feb. 23, 1926, the son of the late Harold and Alma (Amlaw) Bowman. He married Audrey Brown on March 28, 1948 at St. Peter's Church in Plattsburgh.

He graduated from Mount Assumption Institute in 1943 and entered the U.S. Navy shortly thereafter. He served three years in the Navy, mostly in the South Pacific area. Mr. Bowman retired from the Department of Correctional Services as a Lieutenant after 29 years of State service.

He was an active member of the Dannemora Fire Department for 18 years, having served as Secretary, Treasurer, and Captain. He was an exempt fireman. Mr. Bowman was a member of the Rod and Gun Club for 40 years having served as President for numerous years.

He was a member of the V.F.W. and was also a member of the American Legion for 55 years having served as adjutant for 2 years. He was a coach for Little League Baseball teams for 10 years and was active in the Boy Scouts. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Elks Club for 19 years, being an avid bowler in their league.

He is survived by three children and their spouses, Craig Bowman, daughter-in-law Claire Bowman, Brad Bowman, all of Dannemora, Lori and Tim Trombley of Queensbury; 12 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Audrey M. (Brown) Bowman; a son, Curtis.

Calling hours will be held from 5 p..m to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, July 2, 2013, at the Brown Funeral Home, 29 Broad St., Plattsburgh. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, July 3, 2013 at St. Joseph's Church in Dannemora. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery.

Memorial donations may be offered to Hospice of the North Country or the Dannemora Fire Department.
