---- — SARANAC LAKE — Two Saranac Lake men and a teenager were arrested Monday morning after allegedly stealing a car.

The vehicle, missing from Franklin Avenue since Saturday, was located in Albany.

Saranac Lake Police Chief Bruce Nason said Timothy W. Besaw, 21; Thomas M. Hough Jr., 19; and a 17-year-old who was granted youthful-offender status stole a vehicle from the village and drove it to the Albany area.

“The car was reported stolen from Franklin Avenue on Saturday about 9:15 a.m.,” Nason said Monday. “The owner called to report it was missing.”

Village Police began a search for the stolen car and received numerous reports from area residents pointing to the three suspects.

“We started to develop leads after numerous interviews that the car might be in the Albany area, and we called Albany Police and the Guilderland Police Department. The three young men actually turned themselves in to Guilderland Police because they knew we were looking for them,” the chief said.

COMMUNITY INPUT

After the car was reported stolen, an alert was activated to allow all New York law enforcement to be on the lookout.

Nason said they are not sure if the trio took it just for a joy ride or if they had other activities in progress.

“I guess, basically, it was something of that sort (a joy ride). We’re still looking into this to see if anything else is involved.”

The car has not been returned yet to Saranac Lake, Nason said about noon Monday.

And he did not know if the vehicle was intact or damaged in any way.

“We’re just glad we got it back quickly. Some of the information we received in this case were reports from people who happened to notice something and didn’t think it was that important, though it turned out to be.

“We have been fortunate, in this community, that people do come forward and give us information.”

LIQUOR THEFT MARCH 18

Through this investigation, police said they also learned that the 17-year-old was involved in an unrelated theft in the village on March 18.

“During processing, police were able to determine the youthful offender also allegedly broke into a local business and stole several bottles of liquor,” police reports said.

Besaw and Hough were both charged with fourth-degree grand larceny, a felony, after the arrest at 6 a.m. Monday.

Besaw, who, police said, was behind the wheel, was charged with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.

The 17-year-old faces fourth-degree grand larceny, along with two charges related to the alleged liquor theft: felony third-degree burglary and petit larceny.

All three were arraigned early Monday in Saranac Lake Village Court.

Besaw was sent to Essex County Jail in lieu of $2,500 cash bail or a $5,000 bond. Nason said Hough was released after a third party posted $200 bail. And the youth was also released on $500 bail.

They all will reappear in court at a later date to answer the charges.
