Private airstrip proposed

WILLSBORO — An architect who owns a farm on the Essex-Willsboro line would like to put in a private airstrip.

Daniel Arbour, a Canadian who owns Sunset Farm, recently asked permission from the Willsboro Town Council to start action toward constructing Arbour Airstrip on his property.

His attorney, Matthew Norfolk, said State Department of Transportation approval was needed before they could proceed any further. If that were received, the towns of Willsboro and Essex would be approached for authorization of the airstrip project.

Willsboro Town Supervisor Edward Hatch told the Press-Republican that his town gave Norfolk an OK to approach DOT.

“He (Arbour) has a beautiful farm there, where he does crop farming and raises organic cattle,” Hatch said, adding that Arbour wants the airstrip for use of his private, single-engine plane.

But Hatch said that, later, the Adirondack Park Agency rejected the idea, so he isn’t sure whether the project would still be pursued.

Also at the recent Town Council meeting, according to the minutes taken by Town Clerk Beverly Moran:

Health services: CEO Rod Boula of Elizabethtown Community Hospital updated the Town Council on the hospital’s accomplishments for 2012 and plans for 2013. Hatch asked that the hospital stay in touch about its plans for the Smith House Health Care Center in Willsboro.

Truck: Highway Superintendent Peter Jacques said they need to replace a single-axle truck because he and the mechanic are concerned about its stability. Jacques noted it has been a department need for the last three years. He said roads are getting bigger and requiring larger equipment. Jacques discussed the positives of purchasing a tandem truck.

Highway contract: Hatch asked that two checks that were received from the Essex County Highway Department for the snow-and-ice contract for December 2011 be deposited. The checks, in the amounts of $71,066.44 and $476.19, were inadvertently not deposited when received but have been now, he said.
