Harold S. Harblin

PERU — Harold S. Harblin, 88, of Telegraph Road, Peru, died Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2013, at his home under the loving care of his family. Harold was born in Gloversville, May 15, 1924, the son of Percy and Georgia (Stevens) Harblin.

The majority of his life was spent in Peru. When World War II began, Harold was in the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and soon enlisted in the U.S. Army. He served in combat in the North African Campaigns.

He wore many hats throughout his life including serving as a Correction Officer, owned and operated a local trucking company, and lastly retired as a bus driver for the Peru Central School System. Harold served the town as a member of the Assessment Review Committee, and was a member of the Stag Club in Stark, N.Y. He also lovingly restored a 1930 Ford Model AA truck that was featured in many Peru parades.

Harold is survived by a son, Gary of Peru; daughter, Rebecca of West Potsdam; two granddaughters, Jennifer Harblin-Bowlby of Peasleeville, and Sarah Doner of Keeseville; six great-grandchildren; brother, Richard of Broadalbin; sisters, Katie and Mary Lou, and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, wife Jane (Liberty) Harblin, whom he married January 6, 1947 at St. Augustines Church in Peru, two infant children, Raymond and Lynn, a sister Ruby Collins, and brothers Malcolm, Owen, and Lester.

Calling hours will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, at the Hamilton Funeral Home, 294 Mannix Road, Peru. A memorial service will follow at 2 p.m. at the Funeral Home with Monsignor Leeward J. Poissant, officiating. A gathering will follow at Harolds home. Burial will be in the spring in St. Augustines Cemetery in Peru.
