Local man wins big with lottery scratch-off ticket

PLATTSBURGH — A local man is a whole lot richer now after hitting it big on a scratch-off ticket.

Nadim Dergham, owner of International Currency Exchange in Champlain Centre mall, confirmed that a local man won the jackpot on a $30 Win A Million Dollars A Year For Life instant scratch-off ticket last Saturday.

That jackpot is a sweet $1 million per year for life, with a guarantee of at least $20 million.

“It’s the biggest jackpot ever in the North Country,” Dergham said.

The winner is keeping his identity secret until the State Lottery Division makes an official announcement, but Dergham said he is local.

“It’s great to see somebody local win,” he said.

“I am happy for him.”

The win was confirmed on the State Lottery Division’s website, but no other information was available Wednesday.

Dergham was not at the store Saturday but was told that the man was very calm after hitting it big.

“He went up to the window and said, ‘I think I won,” and our employee checked it, and, sure enough, he won,” Dergham said.

The winner thanked the employee and then walked next door to D&D Unisex and got his hair cut.

“He had an appointment that he wanted to keep,” Dergham said.

The hairstylists had no idea what had just happened, said Dergham, whose family also owns the salon. “But he left a $100 tip, and they figured that must have been him.”

Dergham said news of the big winner has created quite a buzz at his businesses.

“Hey, just like the commercial says, you never know.”
