---- — PLATTSBURGH — Chris Miller couldn’t miss Wednesday.
The sophomore guard scored 27 points in the first half and totaled a school-record 50 to lead the Clinton Community College men’s basketball team past Word of Life 99-78 in a nonconference game.
Miller hit 22 field goals and was 6-for-6 from the foul line.
“It was an amazing performance,” Clinton coach Kevin Daugherty said. “He plays on the wing; he had no 3-pointers. Everything was pull-up jumpers, going by guys, scoring on the break. He was all over the place.
“He was very aggressive, and his shot was falling from everywhere except from behind the 3-point line.”
Daugherty added that the Cougars were unselfish in feeding the ball to Miller. The previous single-game record at Clinton was 45 points. Miller surpassed that mark despite leaving the game with nine minutes left.
Stefan Radan scored 12 for Clinton. Mykelle Krecko pulled down 11 rebounds and blocked four shots, and Jamie Davison had six steals and five assists.
The Cougars (14-13) had to rally in the first half after falling behind early. They took their first lead seven minutes before halftime.
“We actually got off to a very slow start and were down 18-4,” Daugherty said. “Real good, aggressive defense by Davison, (Jordan) Coolidge and Chris Miller got us back in the game.”
Clinton led 51-37 at the half.
Miller and fellow sophomores Matt Spencer, Mario Chabau and Jordan Knight were recognized in their final home game.
Mika Duma led Word of Life with 22 points, and Brooks Weygant scored 20.
The Cougars will finish their season Saturday at SUNY Dehli.
