Comments invited about Saranac Lake footbridge

SARANAC LAKE — The State Department of Transportation seeks comments on a proposal to replace the center span of a footbridge bridge here.

The span carries pedestrian traffic from Petrova Elementary School to Leona Lane over State Route 3 in the Village of Saranac Lake.

The bridge was closed in August 2011 after a vehicle struck the center span. On Aug. 30, the center span was again impacted, and due to concerns about structural stability, the decision was made to remove that part of the bridge, according to a press release from DOT.

That work was completed Aug. 31.

DOT is in the scoping-and-preliminary engineering phases of a proposed project to replace the center span with a pre-stressed concrete-slab span that would allow the bridge to reopen to pedestrian traffic.

The new span is being designed to provide additional vertical clearance over Route 3 to minimize the potential for future impacts, while maintaining the existing width and similar visual characteristics.

Design approval for the project is expected this fall, with construction likely in spring 2013.

The deadline for comments is Friday, Oct. 19.
