First Weekends 2014 set to kick off

PLATTSBURGH — The first First Weekends event of the year is coming to downtown Plattsburgh this Friday and Saturday, with activities including a scavenger hunt, fashion show and outdoor concert.

And every first Saturday, now through November, City Hall Place will be closed to traffic to offer a variety of merchants, nonprofits and performers to access the street.

First Weekends was instituted last year to bring more traffic to downtown Plattsburgh.

“We have so many wonderful events planned,” First Weekends Vice President and Events Committee Co-Chair Leigh Simonette said in a press release.

“Some favorites from last year will be returning, and we will have some new traditions.

“This year, we will come back bigger and better than ever.”

DISCOUNT BUTTONS

This year, First Weekends will offer buttons for sale that will give patrons discounts at various downtown businesses.

Buttons, valid for the entire 2014 season, will sell for $10, and all proceeds will help fund events for First Weekends.

“This year, we will see an increase in business participation; the buttons will surely provide value for the price,” First Weekends President Tim McCormick said.

SHOWCASING BUSINESSES

Each first Friday night, First Weekends hopes to showcase one particular downtown business and surrounding businesses in that area through its guest-bartender campaign.

Irises and The Pepper are among the businesses that have been featured so far this year.

“We are hoping by the end of 2014 to have reached out to every downtown business for participation,” Simonette said.

FRIDAY, APRIL 4

This Friday, it will be Peabody’s Bar and Grill on Clinton Street.

Established in 1975 by Robert Wallett, “the famous college hangout is also one of the best-kept secrets in town for their lunch menu,” the press release said.

From 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Wallett, who no longer owns Peabody’s, will be mixing drinks for patrons.
