Leo Joseph "Archie" Cote

CHAZY — Surrounded by his loving family, Leo Joseph "Archie" Cote, passed away Monday, July 1, 2013 at the CVPH Medical Center.

He was born on April 9, 1927 in West Chazy, the son of Frank S. and Lillian M. (West) Cote.

Leo graduated from Chazy Central Rural School in June of 1945, (the only boy in a class of five) and entered the Army Air Corps. He served in the Air Corps until Feb. 11, 1946, specializing as a finance clerk and reaching the rank of Technician Fifth Grade. He was awarded the American Theater and World War Victory Medals. Upon his separation from the military, he returned to Chazy and became an apprentice carpenter, working for several contractors in the area. He worked on many local area churches, schools, hospitals, and Plattsburgh State University College Dormitories.

In 1966 he became Maintenance and Transportation Supervisor at Chazy Central Rural School in Chazy, N.Y. In 1985 he retired, but continued to work as an independent contractor for several years. Leo was one of the initial drivers when the Chazy Volunteer Fire Department received their first ambulance as well as serving as fire commissioner.

He was a lifetime member of the Elks Club #621, the Moose Club, a trustee for the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, and a member of American Legion #769, Russell B. Childs.

Leo is survived by his wife of 63 years, Alice Ida (Bodley) Cote; four sons, Brian married to the former Kim Biggerstaff and their sons, Cole and Zackery, Greg married to the former Cindy Kochman and their daughter, Brianna, Michael married to the former Lynn Szatmary and their two children, Matthew and Deanna, and Kris married to the former Liz Melvin and their daughter, Jaimie who is married to Geoff Mardsen and their two daughters, Lily and Isabella, as well as a son, Frank; one daughter, Susan married to John Carney and their two sons, Andrew married to the former Kelly Miller, and Ian; one sister, Rita who is married to Louis Bedard; and one brother, Charles married to the former Lynda Delano. Archie is also survived by a large extended family and many friends.
