Westport students raise money for Hallowell fund

WESTPORT — Members of Westport Central School’s Class of 2016 laced up their bowling shoes and hit the lanes recently to raise money for the Christopher Emmet Hallowell Fund.

Brad Rascoe, physical-education teacher and athletic coordinator at WCS, said the school asked each class to put together a service project to benefit the community, and the Class of ‘16 decided to raise funds for the Hallowell Fund.

It is an endowment fund at Adirondack Community Trust that was established in memory of Christopher Emmet Hallowell to help families caring for severely ill children and young adults in the Adirondack region.

The students raised $331 to contribute to the fund during the tournament held at Willsboro Bowling Center, which also featured raffles and a bake sale.

“We chose the Hallowell Fund because my family received funds when my daughter had a kidney transplant,” Rascoe said. “Another ninth-grader at Westport also received funds through the Hallowell Fund, so two students from that class were helped by it.”

The Hallowell Fund has given out 24 grants totaling more than $52,000 since 2005, helping about 20 families.
