Olympic Torch Run charted in Franklin County

MALONE — For the first time, the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics will take place in Franklin County.

The event on Friday will bring the Olympic flame through the North Country, heading to its final destination in Buffalo, where the New York State Summer Special Olympic Games will be held June 6.

The inaugural Franklin County Law Enforcement Torch Run begins at 10:45 a.m. Friday at the Four Corners in North Bangor at the intersection of Route 11, Depot Road and Bangor Road.

The ceremony will be opened by Malone Village Police Chief Chris Premo, the local Torch Run coordinator.

The torch will then travel 6.1 miles through the Village of Malone and onto the County Fairgrounds. It will arrive at noon, accompanied by as many as 30 runners, including Premo and some of his department’s junior officers, County Sheriff Kevin Mulverhill and some of his staff, members of New York State Police Troop B and representatives from U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

From there, participants will walk to American Legion Post 219 on Elm Street, where members will treat them to a barbecue.

Proceeds from the sale of $20 T-shirts commemorating the Torch Run will be donated to Special Olympics.

More than $1.7 million was raised through different events last year across New York, according to a news release from Special Olympics.

The money goes toward training, equipment, uniforms and transportation for the athletes.

“This is all volunteers, and it does two things: It raises money for Special Olympics and raises awareness of these athletes,” Premo said.

Last year, the chief, Mulverhill and a slew of others wearing badges climbed onto the roof of Dunkin’ Donuts in Malone for the Cops on Top fundraiser for the Olympians, but this year, they’re staying on the ground.

“This is the first year we’re having a Torch Run, but we’ve participated in the Polar Plunge in Massena and other law-enforcement days in Franklin County,” he said.
