PLATTSBURGH — The Clinton County Senior Mariners rapped nine hits in Wednesday’s opening game but struggled at the plate in the nightcap.
The Mariners defeated Malone Post 326 6-4 to start off the doubleheader at Lefty Wilson Field and then fell 5-2.
In the first game, Clinton County (8-4) plated two runs in the third to pull ahead 4-3 and then scored two more in the fifth.
Brandon Rabideau struck out 10 and walked three to pick up the complete-game win. He allowed five hits.
Mitchell Cunningham went 3-for-3, including a double, and drove in three runs. Jake Richards hit a double and a single, and Tanner Rascoe doubled.
“The first game was strong for us,” Clinton County coach Matt Tolosky said. “Good base running. Timely hits. A good performance defensively and offensively.”
Malone took a 3-2 lead in the fourth inning of the second game and then added insurance runs in the fifth and seventh. The Mariners were limited to three hits.
“Their pitcher kept us off-balance; we could not make good contact with the ball,” Tolosky said. “We had our opportunities, but we left 10 runners on base.”
Alex Johnson had two hits for Malone, and Brandon Welch doubled.
The Mariners’ Marcus Lefebre pitched into the fifth inning and suffered the loss.
Clinton County committed four errors in the second game.
“The errors proved to be costly,” Tolosky said. “It was a recipe for disaster having hitters off-balance, leaving runners stranded and giving them runs. We weren’t at our best in Game 2.”
