Fireworks, parades to mark holiday

PLATTSBURGH — Holiday events kick off today and continue through the Fourth of July.

Here’s a look at what’s happening:


July Fourth: 8 a.m. Firecracker Run 6.5-K, across the Blockhouse Road from the Catholic Church, with registration from 7:30 a.m.; 9:15 a.m., Children’s Run with registration by the blinking traffic light just before the run; 10 a.m.. Patriotic Hymn Sing at St. John’s Church and Strawberry Shortcake Sale at Essex Community Church; 10:30 a.m., Penelope the Clown face painting and balloon animals in front of the Essex Ice Cream Cafe; 11 a.m. parade along Main Street, sponsored by the Essex Fire Department District to honor late Fire Chief David S. Lansing; after the parade, the Fire Department will be selling hot dogs, sausages, hamburgers and cold beverages on Beggs Point; and 3 p.m., annual spelling bee at the Essex Town Hall.

Saturday: 9:30 p.m., fireworks off of Beggs Point on Lake Champlain.


July Fourth: Noon, parade followed by food and fun at the firehouse, live music by Lucid; dusk, fireworks. Sponsored by Jay  Volunteer Fire Department.


July Fourth: 1 to 3 p.m., I Love BBQ and Music Fest with pulled pork; all day, BMX bike exhibition, bounce play areas, coconut climbing trees at Lake Placid Speed Skating Oval; 4:30 p.m. parade lineup on Cummins Road in front of Olympic Center. Parade turns left onto Main Street and ends at High Peaks Resort; activities all afternoon in Mid’s Park, courtesy of WSLP FM 93.3; and at dusk, “Set the Night to Music” fireworks display over Mirror Lake, choreographed to music on WSLP.


Sunday: Star-Spangled Trail Marathon and Barbecue at the Paul Smith’s Visitor Interpretive Center. Full marathon starts at 8 a.m., half marathon at 9 a.m. and a 1-K kids race at 9:45 a.m. Sign up at
