ALTONA — The methamphetamine lab raided on Tuesday evening had been active within the past 24 hours, authorities say.
And several youth, including a 13-year-old, were at the home at 1867 Alder Bend Road where the bust took place.
Julius B. Chagnon and Cristal M. Dennis were arrested at about 8:40 p.m. Tuesday and arraigned in Altona Town Court, each charged with unlawful manufacturing of meth, a felony; unlawful disposal of meth lab material, a felony; endangering the welfare of a child, a misdemeanor; and unlawful burning, a violation.
Clinton County Sheriff Dave Favro said Chagnon and Dennis are husband and wife.
The couple were found in possession of precursors for meth production, according to a Sheriff's Department release.
"Investigation revealed the defendants had been utilizing the red-phosphorous method of methamphetamine production ..."
Sheriff’s deputies saw Chagnon and Dennis burning the hazardous materials in a fire pit outside the home.
Also assisting the Sheriff's Department in the investigation were State Police, the Drug Enforcement Agency, Clinton County District Attorney’s Office.
Those agencies are part of the Adirondack Drug Task Force, as are Plattsburgh City Police, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection Border Patrol.
Altona Volunteer Fire Department also assisted at the location.
Altona Justice Allen Bilow, who had provided the search warrant for the property, set bail for Chagnon and Dennis at $15,000 cash or $30,000 bond each.
They remained in Clinton County Jail as of Wednesday afternoon.
