Eagles roll, PHS loses close one at Mingo Bay

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — A day after a sloppy loss to Charleston Catholic, Beekmantown was able to limit its errors and get critical hits to defeat Lake City 10-2 Wednesday at the Mingo Bay Tournament.

In their 12-5 loss Tuesday, the Eagles committed 11 errors, but on Wednesday against Lake City (S.C.), they were able to settle down and limit their errors to three.

“We did a very good job improving from (Tuesday),” coach Eric Bell said. “We did a really good job bouncing back.”

Bell credited excellent pitching by senior Austin Bradish and junior Greg Manney.

Both Bradish and Manney did a good job collectively numbering their walks and forcing the other team to hit ground balls,” Bell said. “Their good pitching really settled the whole team down.”

Bradish pitched into the sixth inning and earned the win.

Juniors Quenton Barber and Brennan Pelkey added two hits and an RBI each to lead Beekmantown offensively.

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — After taking an early 3-1 lead into the fourth inning Wednesday, South Range (Ohio) was able to earn runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh, which sent Plattsburgh to its second loss of the season.

Robby Knowles had a good start for the Hornets, pitching into the fifth inning. Knowles also went 1-for-4 at the plate with an RBI. Alex Maston recorded a double for the Hornets — the game’s only extra base hit.

Plattsburgh used five pitchers in the game, a tactic coach Jim Manchester used as a way to preserve some of his guys’ arms.

“We play four games in four days,” Manchester said. “We want to piece things together, so we don’t burn pitchers out.”

Dan Hartman, who entered in the fifth inning in relief of Knowles, ended up taking the loss for the Hornets.
